A Great Gift for Girls
By Carrie Gress
It can be challenge coming up with gifts for girls, particularly for special events like First Communion. Finding something memorable and unique that can help mark the occasion is a tall order.
My sister, Mary, mother to six girls (and one boy), came up with a brilliant gift idea several years ago that I have shamelessly copied: charm bracelets. The beauty of this gift is that a bracelet and perhaps a single charm can be purchased initially, and then as the years go by, other charms can be added for birthdays, Christmas, and special occasions. It is something thoughtful that can truly be personalized, while also cherished for a lifetime (and passed along through the family).
My sister's go-to jeweler is James Avery. It is a family company based in Texas with stores all over the South, but also sold through Dillard's around the country. When my sister's story got back to the company, they decided to feature her and her kids in one of their catalogues telling the story about their charm bracelets. (Link to the full story.)
James Avery has a wide collection of charms in sterling silver and gold specifically for the sacraments of baptism, first communion, confirmation. They also have some beautiful religious themes charms, like Our Lady of Guadalupe, crosses, and fleur di lis. There are literally thousands to choose from that can suit every personality.
For my sister, she cherishes the thought that down the road these charm bracelets will be a way for her girls "to always have a piece of Mom and Dad in their hearts and homes.”
